2019 The Amateur Champion

Writer: Kevin DowlingKevin Dowling

One of the first Golf Bucket Lists we created was for Irish professional golfer James Sugrue. James is currently making his mark on the Alps Tour, working hard to build his career as a professional golfer. His most notable achievement as an amateur was winning The Amateur Championship in 2019, a victory that really put him on the map.

James had an incredible amateur career. As a junior, he won several championships and proudly represented Ireland in international team events. One of his standout victories was at the prestigious South of Ireland Championship in Lahinch. His success didn't stop there. After winning The Amateur Championship at Portmarnock, James was selected for the Walker Cup team at Royal Liverpool (Hoylake), which was a significant milestone in his career.

Winning The Amateur Championship opened doors to some of golf's most prestigious tournaments, including The Open Championship in 2019, the Masters Tournament in 2020, and the U.S. Open at Winged Foot. James's invitation to the Masters was well-deserved and an exciting opportunity. However, as he prepared for the Masters in March 2020, the world was beginning to feel the impact of COVID-19. The tournament was postponed to November, and James played at Augusta without any fans present, a unique experience during an unforgettable time.

One of the most exciting projects we worked on was creating the Golf Bucket List of Ireland for James Sugrue. This premium golf gift was a custom design, featuring a hand-drawn picture of James with the Amateur Championship cup. The bucket list included Ireland’s 30 best golf courses, highlighting iconic locations that every golfer dreams of playing.

James, with his busy amateur career, was able to stamp off 29 of the 30 courses on his bucket list. The only course left for him to play was Carne Golf Club, making it a top priority for him in the future. This personalised golf gift not only celebrated James’s achievements but also served as a reminder of the courses that shaped his journey.
